“Virus Jihad”: The (Mis)Representation of Muslims during Covid 19 Outbreak in Indian Media

This study examined the media representations of Muslims during first wave Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in India. The conducted a thematic discourse analysis on TV debates aftermath an Islamic congregation Delhi whose attendees were tested positive with COVID-19 infection. found overall negative representation mainstream which corroborates previous studies, albeit, different contexts. Three key themes that emerged from narratives representing as: (i) carriers virus bomb (ii) ‘super spreaders’ and (iii) uncivilized ‘Other’ irreconcilable differences. These findings situated wider (re)emerging field Hindu nationalism to argue unsympathetic reflected their support for ethno-nationalist ideology current ruling dispensation.
